About Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur 2025

The Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur (SCEKL) is Southeast Asia’s premier gathering for urban innovation and digital transformation. As the first edition of the global Smart City Expo movement in this region, #SCEKL25 brings together experts, policymakers, and industry leaders to share practical solutions for building inclusive, environmentally responsible, and tech-enabled cities.

Taking place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, right next to the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, the event offered modern facilities and a prime location for this milestone in Southeast Asia’s smart city journey.

Part of a Global Smart City Movement

Since its beginnings in Barcelona in 2013, the Smart City Expo movement has expanded worldwide. Kuala Lumpur now joins the global network with #SCEKL25, giving Southeast Asia a platform to explore urban innovation, sustainability, and digital transformation.

The theme for this year’s event, “Shaping the Future Together”, highlighted how collaboration across governments, industries, and communities is essential in addressing today’s urban challenges.

Visionary Address by Malaysia’s Prime Minister

A major highlight of #SCEKL25 was the opening keynote on Day 2, delivered by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Bin Ibrahim. In his historic address titled “Malaysia’s AI Cities Vision”, he reaffirmed the country’s leadership in AI-powered urban development:

“Malaysia will continue to lead in shaping AI-powered urban transformation. Our goal is to ensure technology empowers citizens, strengthens communities, and drives long-term economic growth.”

The Prime Minister also officially launched the Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur 2025, setting the stage for powerful discussions and collaborations to come.

Highlights from the Expo

This year’s expo showcased groundbreaking technologies and inspiring exhibits:

  • DBKL Booth – The largest booth at the event, featuring Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s technologies and smart city vision.
  • Dell Technologies – Demonstrated AI infrastructure solutions for smart city innovation.
  • Grab – Introduced advanced mapping solutions for urban mobility.
  • Sophia the Robot – Hanson Robotics’ world-renowned humanoid robot drew crowds with her lifelike presence, symbolizing the future of human-AI interaction.

Sophia, recognized as the world’s first robot citizen and the United Nations Development Programme’s Innovation Ambassador, captivated visitors. Beyond being a global icon, she serves as a framework for cutting-edge research in robotics, AI, and human-robot interaction.

Bateriku’s Contribution: Building Smarter, Greener Cities

Bateriku was given the opportunity to present its ecosystem at #SCEKL25. On 17th September, Muhsin Sabri delivered a talk titled “Battery Ecosystems for Smarter Cities: Driving the Future of Urban Sustainability”, where he highlighted how Bateriku’s work contributes to greener, more sustainable urban environments.

On 18th September, Bateriku also took part in a live theatre panel discussion at Hall 4, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The session, themed “Co-Creating the Smart City Landscape”, brought together MSCA members to share their expertise.

Panel Discussion: Co-Creating the Smart City Landscape

Moderator: Amir Shariff, BCN Smart Technologies Sdn Bhd

Panelists:

  • Ang Kah Heng, Cyberview Sdn Bhd
  • Azura Binti Ali, Sistem Perintis
  • Mohamed Shajahan Iqbal, Three Opp (M) Sdn Bhd
  • Muhsin Sabri, Bateriku (M) Sdn Bhd
  • Bahn Seung Hyun, O2&B CO., LTD

Each panelist shared perspectives from their respective sectors on building the smart cities of tomorrow.

Bateriku emphasized its sustainability business model, where scrap batteries are collected and recycled to reduce carbon emissions. The company also introduced the Briged Hijau Initiative, which has already set up ten collection at our pitstops outlet for e-waste recycling in partnership with EcoNiLi Battery, a global battery recycling company, with factories in Malaysia and in Indonesia.

Other panelists also brought valuable perspectives to the discussion. Azura Binti Ali from Sistem Perintis emphasized that smart city development cannot rely on technology alone; it requires strong efforts in educating the public and upskilling the workforce so that citizens, workers, and communities are prepared to embrace and support new innovations. She highlighted that awareness campaigns and continuous training are essential to ensure smart city initiatives are not only implemented but also understood and adopted by society.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Shajahan Iqbal from Three Opp (M) Sdn Bhd pointed out the challenges of aligning municipalities and government officials with international best practices. He noted that in some cases, even local authorities and decision-makers are not fully aware of global standards that should guide smart city projects. This gap, he argued, can slow down progress and create inconsistencies in execution, underscoring the need for stronger knowledge-sharing platforms and standardized frameworks across Malaysia’s urban development landscape.

The discussion underscored the critical role of MSCA in championing smart city solutions, amplifying industry voices, and fostering knowledge exchange.
