Bateriku contributed to the recycling programme “Anda Kitar, Kami Bayar” (AKKB) organised by the Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah (MBMB), which took place on 28 February 2026 at Dataran MBMB. The initiative aims to encourage recycling practices within the local community, where recyclable items brought by participants can be exchanged for vouchers.

Community Recycling Initiative

The AKKB programme is one of MBMB’s annual recycling initiatives, conducted in collaboration with several government agencies and industry partners. The programme promotes responsible waste management by encouraging the public to recycle items such as:

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Plastic bottles
  • Used cooking oil
  • Electrical and electronic waste
  • Used clothing
  • Other recyclable materials

Besides serving as a collection point for recyclable materials, the organisers also held a public sharing session to raise awareness about the importance of separating waste before recycling. The event attracted an estimated 300 visitors, including the Mayor of Melaka, YBhg. Datuk Hj. Shadan bin Hj. Othman, along with officials from MBMB.

Bateriku Drives Used Battery Recycling

Bateriku participated in AKKB as one of the programme partners responsible for collecting used vehicle batteries through its Briged Hijau initiative. Used car batteries contain lead and must be disposed of responsibly. Through its involvement in AKKB, Bateriku ensures that any used vehicle batteries submitted by the public are handled and recycled in compliance with environmental regulations.

Each month, Briged Hijau manages the collection of around 40,000 used car batteries, equivalent to roughly 500 metric tonnes. With the average vehicle battery lifespan ranging between four to six years, it is estimated that about 3.2 million vehicles require battery replacement annually.

Recycling vehicle batteries is crucial because 75% of the country’s lead demand comes from the automotive battery industry, while Malaysia does not have local lead mines to produce new batteries.

Ongoing Recycling Efforts With Bateriku

The AKKB programme will continue throughout 2026, with several upcoming sessions already scheduled. Residents can plan to participate by bringing recyclable items during these events as part of a family-friendly weekend activity focused on sustainability.

Upcoming dates include:

  • 16 May 2026
  • 18 July 2026 (Dataran Bandaraya MBMB)
  • 19 September 2026
  • 21 November 2026

Melaka residents who wish to participate can bring recyclable items such as paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, used cooking oil, used batteries, e-waste, worn clothing, and other recyclable materials to exchange them for voucher incentives.

Through collaboration between local authorities, government agencies, and industry partners such as Bateriku, programmes like AKKB aim to strengthen public awareness about responsible waste management and encourage communities to adopt recycling as a regular habit.
