Johor Bahru, 22 September 2025 – One of our representatives proudly joined the MY5G SME Workshop (Southern Edition) held in Johor Bahru, an event that gathered over 300 participants under the theme “Southern Gateway to Growth, SME Beyond Borders.”
The workshop, hosted by CelcomDigi Berhad (CelcomDigi), is part of the MY5G SME Digital Workshop Series 2025 – an initiative designed to accelerate the digital transformation of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across Malaysia. The program focuses on providing SMEs with practical knowledge, tools, and skills to drive digitalisation with greater ease and speed.

One of the highlights of the event was the Fireside Chat, a relaxed yet insightful session that brought together industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators to share their stories and experiences with Malaysia’s SME community.
The session was moderated by Ms. Lee Shin Mei, Chief Operating Officer of CTOS Data Systems Sdn Bhd. With over 20 years of extensive leadership experience, Ms. Lee has built a remarkable career across diverse industries. Before joining CTOS, she held leadership roles in several renowned companies, including her tenure at Google as the Head of Enterprise Business. Her deep expertise in business transformation, technology adoption, and corporate strategy brought sharp insights and direction to the session, ensuring the dialogue remained practical, engaging, and impactful for SME participants.

The benefits for SMEs through digitalisation
Mr. Muhsin highlighted how digital adoption opens new opportunities for efficiency, scalability, and cross-border expansion. For SMEs, embracing digital tools means streamlined operations, improved customer engagement, and access to wider markets. For BPreneurs, entrepreneurs and grassroots changemakers within Bateriku’s network digitalisation creates pathways to stronger partnerships, real-time business insights, and a more sustainable business model.
Bateriku’s positioning in Johor and Singapore
Johor’s role as a strategic gateway to Singapore makes it one of the busiest international corridors in the region. Every day, more than 350,000 people and over 150,000 vehicles cross the Johor–Singapore Causeway and Second Link. This constant flow of mobility represents not only a massive market for automotive and mobility-related services but also a goldmine of potential customers for SMEs operating in Johor.
He explained how Bateriku leverages this daily cross-border movement to expand its reach and deliver value-added services. He urged Johor-based SMEs to recognize and tap into this opportunity, positioning themselves to serve both local and cross-border markets that continue to grow in size and demand.
Support from the Johor State Government, GLCs, and industries
Mr. Muhsin also emphasized the importance of public-private collaboration in accelerating SME success. Government initiatives, together with the involvement of GLCs and key industries, provide a robust support system ranging from grants and infrastructure development to capacity-building programs. Such partnerships are instrumental in helping companies like Bateriku innovate, scale operations, and contribute meaningfully to Johor’s and Malaysia’s digital economy.
Also featured on the panel was Dato’ Calvin Chan, Founder & CEO of Oriental Kopi, a well-known Malaysian entrepreneur recognized for his business ventures and leadership. Dato’ Calvin is the founder of Leagoo Malaysia, a global smartphone brand, and the force behind Oriental Kopi, famous for its authentic Nanyang cuisine and signature items such as Oriental coffee, Portuguese egg tarts, and Polo buns. His entrepreneurial achievements have earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians (TOYM) Award in 2020.
During the discussion, Dato’ Calvin spoke about the mindset SMEs must adopt to succeed, stressing that advocacy and knowledge optimisation are crucial for long-term growth. He highlighted that business leaders must continuously push for better awareness, education, and information-sharing to strengthen the SME ecosystem. His perspective resonated strongly with the audience, reinforcing the role of resilience, teamwork, and a growth mindset in driving business sustainability.
